Welcome to the October 2008 issue of Dulcimer Sessions®!
The Mel Bay family of dulcimer books contains outstanding resources for a wide variety of music styles. You'll see what I mean when you visit www.melbayxpress.com then click on Dulcimer in the left margin. Click on Hammered Dulcimer or Mountain Dulcimer and check out the "All" line for a delightful browse!
This issue contains the following articles and music for your enjoyment:
- "Get Noterized" by Ken Hulme. Noter-style playing is an old tradition for the
mountain dulcimer. Ken Hulme has written an excellent detailed account of noters, playing
techniques and his noter-style arrangement of the English folk song "Early One Morning."
- "More Fun with Arranging for Mountain Dulcimer" by Peter Tommerup. A follow-up to Peter's June 1 issue article on Arranging, this article gives tips on personalizing and breathing life into an arrangement. Includes more musical options in variations and embellishments of the tune "Maggie Brown's Favorite."
Hammered dulcimer players will find musical notation in the above music, and the following are especially included for hammered dulcimer:
- "Bridget Cruise" arranged by Maggie Sansone from her Mel Bay book
Maggie's Big Book of Celtic Tunes for Hammered Dulcimer and other Instruments (Mel Bay
20207). This lovely harp tune was written by 17th/18th Century Irish composer Turlough
O'Carolan.
- "Abbots Bromley Horn Dance" arranged by Peggy Carter is from her Mel
Bay book Hammered Dulcimer Arrangements for Special Occasions (Mel Bay 21306). This
ancient melody has been used to accompany an English ritual dance for many centuries.
Don't forget to view previous articles in our Back Issues. You'll find 30 more issues with free music arrangements, sound files, articles and interesting photos!
I invite hammered and mountain dulcimer players to submit articles to me for possible inclusion in future issues of Dulcimer Sessions. We also welcome requests for new subjects from visitors to this website.
