Mountain Dulcimer: The Cherry Tree Carol
arranged by Ralph Lee Smith & Madeline MacNeil
This book presents the stories and music of two young women, Josephine McGill and Loraine Wyman, who worked independently as “song catchers” in the Kentucky mountains during the early years of the 20th Century. It also has delightful photos of early mountain dulcimers, players, and scenes from that time and place. This version of “The Cherry Tree Carol” was collected by Josephine McGill in eastern Kentucky. She referred to it as an “exquisite example of quaintness, naivete, literary charm and enchanting melody.”
Just as below, the book’s music is arranged by Ralph and Madeline in standard notation and mountain dulcimer tablature. The first tablature is for dulcimers tuned to Dad, and the second for dulcimers tuned in DAA.
